Locations where I visited
This will be the last report on Autumn Foliage in 2024. This time, I will introduce you to the autumn vibes where I’m from. The trail begins with Yamashita Park to explore the area’s yellow landscape and then takes a short excursion to Shomyoji Temple.
1. What Autumn Feels Like
Autumn in Yokohama feels like a gentle embrace. The sunlight filters through the thinning canopy, casting a warm glow that contrasts the cool breezes. The city’s bustling energy slows down as people take time to admire the beauty of the season.
What Makes it Unique?
Its harmonious blend of Urban Sophistication and Natural Beauty sets Yokohama apart in autumn. The city’s waterfront areas, like Minatomirai, reflect the fiery colours of the season against their modern skyline.
Around Yamashita Park, Ginkgo Trees become a boulevard of gold during the season. From the end of November to the middle of December, The ginkgo trees lining the paths turn brilliant yellow, creating a radiant tunnel that attracts photographers and nature lovers alike.
2. All Turn Into Yellow
The Boulevard of Ginkgo Trees
This time of year, the golden Ginkgo Trees paint the landscape in vibrant shades of yellow, their leaves shimmering under the crisp autumn sky. The boulevard of ginkgo trees stretching from Yamashita Park to Nihon Odori Station is particularly stunning, drawing visitors with its picture-perfect scenery and inviting them to slow down and take in the season’s beauty.
When sunlight filters through the leaves, the trees take on a radiant, golden glow that perfectly complements the area’s Western-style architecture, creating a scene so picturesque it feels almost like stepping into another world.
The salty tang of Yokohama’s sea breeze mingles with the distinct smell of fallen ginkgo nuts, a sensory reminder that autumn has fully settled into this beautiful coastal city.
3. A Heart Of Gold
After enjoying the ginkgo trees, why not venture out to explore some of Yokohama’s recommended autumn foliage spots? While famous places like Sankeien Garden are always worth visiting, this time, let me guide you to a hidden gem.
About Shomyoji Temple
Shomyoji Temple (称名寺) is about a 15-minute walk from Kanazawa-Bunko Station of Keikyu Railway. As you step inside, the first thing that catches your eye is its distinctive red bridge. Centered around the vermilion-painted arched and flat bridges, the Jodo-style garden is breathtakingly beautiful, with historical structures and stunning trees creating a harmonious scene.
Surrounding the large Ajigaike Pond are ancient trees, including ginkgo trees over 800 years old, offering a sense of each season’s charm. As you walk further through the open grounds and pass through the tunnel at the back, you’ll find the Kanesawa-Bunko, a library established by the Hojo clan. It is now a museum that preserves and displays various treasured artifacts, making it a favorite spot for locals.
Time to Have a Heart of Gold
The highlight, however, is the evening view. The entire temple is bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, giving it a golden aura. While I was immersed in photographing this enchanting scene, a kind local shared with me the best spot to capture the autumn colours. That thoughtful gesture turned the moment into a truly heartwarming experience.
